What's Up at School
Technology supports parent participation and involvement

Ask an average teen how school was, and they'll say “fine.” Ask them what they learned about that day, and they'll say “lots of stuff” or “nothing much.” There has to be a better way for parents to keep tabs on how children are actually doing at school.

“When I did my first Landmark community focused program, I got in touch with how much I am in love with education,” Soorena Salari says. “Plus, I have been involved with the technology field since 1977. As I was grappling with how to have communications work in the best interest of the child and it became obvious to me that putting the two together in this unique way would make the difference.”

Salari saw that students, teachers, parents, children and other educators were doing the best they can yet there was something lacking in support for students. His answer was to launch YourHomework.com, a communication system via the World Wide Web.

Today it is a great success in school districts across the United States, playing host to more than 2,500 schools and more than a million students. The idea is simple. Teachers post all homework assignments, field trip details, report due dates, and other information on the Web site, which is free and available to anyone authorized through an access code.

Parents and students can go to the site at anytime to track homework assignments, current and previous, and other information. If a student is having a problem, or if a parent has a question or concern, the site allows students and parents to communicate with teachers or administrators. Now parents can easily keep up with and facilitate the educational success of their children in partnership with principals, teachers and librarians.

It takes a village to raise a child. Salari concluded, “We're not just an educational company. We're facilitators of a cyberspace village providing support for thousands of children - and that's a very crucial thing.”
