Attitudes and Attire: Disadvantaged women develop confidence in their job search
Applying for work can be stressful for anyone, but for thousands of economically disadvantaged women seeking a job in difficult times, the challenges are especially great. Recognizing that, Christiana Gaston decided to help.
"One of the many things I had learned from Landmark was that life is what you make it to be,” she said, “I wanted to share that with women, especially those who were re-joining the job market after several years.”
Gaston (who, incidentally, decided to register in Landmark after she saw what a difference it made in her once-crabby and hard-to-deal-with boss), teamed up with another woman to work on a job training program for women.
Now in its eighth year, the nonprofit organization “Attitudes and Attire,” which provides jobseekers with training, advice, referrals, and clothing, is going strong. More than 1,000 women will participate this year alone. And as economic uncertainty and the trend toward downsizing government assistance continues, it's likely that many more women seeking employment will be looking to innovators like Christiana for guidance.
