Charting a Course for My Self, My Company, My Country

I am the CEO of Jamaica Money Market Brokers Ltd. (JMMB), the largest investment house in Jamaica.

JMMB is the brainchild of my mother, who founded the company in November 1992. She was a visionary and loving leader who established the company on the values of love, integrity, and service. When she died in July 1998, I was appointed her successor. At 36, I felt like I was thrown into the “deep end” and drowning. Then I registered for The Landmark Forum. I went to Landmark riddled with self-doubt, not believing that I could effectively follow in the footsteps of my powerful mother, who had been like a mother to each member of our team.

I left The Landmark Forum full of possibility – thinking for myself, my company, and my country – with a renewed lease on life. I set about charting a course for the company – a transformational path. Three years later, we have tripled in size and quadrupled the profit.

My personal life also moved in unexpected ways. I shifted my relationship with myself and found that wherever I had thought I wasn’t worthwhile in terms of having a great relationship, that simply wasn’t the case. Where before I seemed never to have satisfying relationships, I now have a fantastic relationship with a fabulous mate and I’m enjoying every moment of it.

On a broader scale, I also saw the possibility of the transformation of Jamaica. I saw the possibility of Jamaicans taking responsibility for ourselves and our country – turning around the country. We could manifest the beauty within ourselves and our island. We could have peace and prosperity. I decided that I wanted to work to bring The Landmark Forum to Jamaica. I began to enrol individuals in the course, including Diana Burgess, the Cultural Development Officer at JMMB, and Beverly Manley, former first lady and first leader of the women’s movement.

We formed a team with Mollie Partridge, the indomitable center manager in Florida, who stood powerfully for The Landmark Forum in Jamaica. Our first Landmark Forum in Jamaica included 265 participants. On the closing evening of the course, when participants had an opportunity to invite guests, we had hundreds and hundreds of Jamaicans engaged in a conversation for the transformation of ourselves and our country. 365 signed up to do the next Landmark Forum in Jamaica and 165 graduates signed up to do the Advanced Course.

Now, out of my participation in Landmark, I’m more active in my country. I am partnering with a group of visionary leaders in a project called “Transformation Jamaica.” Our vision is:

“We are taking responsibility for self, family, community, country, and world; we are bringing forth a new Jamaica that produces extraordinary results. A Jamaica in which there is love, respect, and compassion, and education that fosters knowledge of heritage and self. Here leadership is based on service, accountability, and courage; and promotes reconciliation, and hope.”

The Landmark Forum opened my eyes to the possibility of living a life you love, owning and realizing my purpose here, letting go the constraints of the past, and loving powerfully. This is the gift I wish for each person who has the privilege of life!
