Committed to a Bold Promise

Being committed to a bold promise brings about a world similar to a work of art created by a sculptor. You start with a piece of shapeless material, not too sure how to begin or how it will end up. There is a passion, an energy, a commitment to create something inspiring and hopefully, that would also be enjoyed by others. Sometimes the work is effortless, sometimes not. You let people know what you are up to. Some share your enthusiasm, some are indifferent, others critical. Yet, you don’t let others’ reactions stop you. There is no turning back.

Being an immigrant in the United States, I felt safe with my life limited to myself, my family, my work, and a small circle of friends. My purpose in life was fulfilling my duties as a daughter, a wife, and a mother. All that changed after I completed my Landmark Forum. I realized I wanted to live fully, be extraordinary, be powerful, and make a difference in the world around me. I evolved from a passive, self-absorbed individual to an active, community-minded person.

I became committed to bring Landmark Education to Asia. I played a key part being the persistent voice. With many other wonderful people, recently bringing the first-ever Landmark Forum to the Philippines. I kept the communication flowing among different teams in the United States and Asia, giving coaching and guidance when requested. Graduates from Hong Kong and Singapore were notified and invited to participate, as we want to create Landmark there as well – and it’s already in the making.

In addition to my Landmark activities, active community services became a passion. I participated in many organizations that promoted different cultures and peace. I found myself useful as a bridge that connects the gaps between different communities. I was appointed as a human relations commissioner in my area. From this organization, I was constantly exposed to the dark and ugly sides of humanity, such as violence, discrimination, hate crimes, and racism. Throughout three terms of being the Contra Costa County human relations commissioner, I spoke on many issues, including domestic violence against women and children; violence related to drugs; homelessness and poverty; human rights and women’s rights; immigrant discrimination and inequality; safe and healthy neighborhood for families, and many other community issues. Community events such as “Stop the Violence” and “Walk for Peace at Home” have been organized to bring out awareness in these issues.

I am not stopped by challenges, disagreements, or opposing actions. The sculpture is today taking shape. I see The Landmark Forum as a powerful tool for positive changes, causing individual, organizational, and cultural transformation to happen in every part of the world.
