Dan Yankelovich Biography
Daniel Yankelovich, a leading interpreter of trends shaping American society and the global economy, is:
- Director or director emeritus of CBS, Loral Space and Communications, the Meredith Corporation, and US West; and trustee or trustee emeritus of Brown University, the Concord Coalition, the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the Fund for the City of New York, and the Kettering Foundation
- Author of ten books, including Coming to Public Judgment, New Rules, and The Magic of Dialogue: Transforming Conflict into Cooperation. In 1999, The Magic of Dialogue won the Common Ground Book Award for Achievement in Conflict Resolution.
- Founder and chairman of three companies: Viewpoint Learning, Inc. (a new firm helping organizations communicate more effectively through dialogue); Public Agenda (a public education NGO co-founded with Cyrus Vance in 1975); and DYG, Inc. (a research firm that tracks social trends).
- Currently affiliated with the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), and formerly research professor of psychology at NYU and the graduate faculty of the New School.
His private consulting clients during the past few years have included Harvard University, Brown University, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Institute for Advanced Study, Odyssey Partners, the Blackstone Group/Toyota, and Warburg-Pincus.
In 1958, he founded the highly regarded firm of Yankelovich, Skelly and White (now Yankelovich Partners); and in the 1970s he initiated the New York Times/Yankelovich poll (which evolved into the New York Times/CBS poll). He was also a founding president of the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics.
He was educated at the Boston Latin School, Harvard College, Harvard University (the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences), and the Sorbonne. He holds honorary doctorates from Washington University, George Washington University, and St. Bonaventure University.
He is the recipient of the Parlin Award for his pioneering work in marketing research, the Dinerman Award of the World Association of Public Opinion Research, and the Outstanding Achievement Award from the New York Chapter of the American Association of Public Opinion Research.
He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
