On the morning of December 25, 2009 in Thailand, Jerome Downes passed away from complications after heart surgery. Jerome was an extraordinary colleague, leader, husband, father, and friend, and his death represents a profound loss to all who knew him. Jerome devoted his life to contributing to others.
For most of his professional life, Jerome was a staff member at Landmark Education and its predecessor companies. He was a senior Landmark Forum leader, one of the founding staff members of Landmark Education, a board member and the executive accountable for Asia operations. Through his vision, innovation, and leadership, he pioneered the availability of Landmark’s programs and opened 14 new locations, including Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Mainland China, and South Korea. Jerome could speak to any of these audiences in translated English and win their hearts. His brilliance and his authenticity leaped over cultural barriers. Jerome made a difference in everything he touched. Throughout his career, Jerome led The Landmark Forum and other courses to more than 300,000 people worldwide.
Jerome Downes was born in Massachusetts and most recently lived in Tokyo. He played ice hockey in high school, was named MVP of the team, and went on to become a member of the United States Hockey Team. His interests included art history and filmmaking, for which he won three awards and received a Ford Foundation grant. He held a bachelor's degree from Colorado College.
Jerome is survived by his wife, Judy, and their daughter Asia; his sister and brother in-law, Mara and KC McGrail and their children Sean and Mikaela; and his brother, Peter Downes. Jerome will be enormously missed. The Landmark Education staff and Landmark Forum leaders are committed to fulfilling Jerome's vision for Asia and the difference he's committed to making in the world.
